If you are suffering from an ant problem, you might not feel safe in your own home. You might find ants in your food, on your floor, or dropping from your ceiling. This can be extremely frustrating for you. You might have done all the right things and checked the corners and walls of your house for openings that could let ants in and placed ant traps, but the ants still keep coming. Here are some unusual ways that ants might be getting into your home and how you can get them to stop.
The prime suspect that you need to look at is your dishwasher. Your dishwasher might have an opening to the outside of your home that ants can use to crawl into your home. To make matters worse, the opening is probably relatively easy to find because the ants will be able to smell the food on your dirty plates and other dishes that you load into the dishwasher. You need to do two things. The first is get rid of the ants that might be climbing up through your dishwasher right now. The second is get rid of the smell that could cause the ants to continue coming into your dishwasher.
Luckily, fixing both of those problem is easy. First, empty your dishwasher entirely. Then, take a bottle of vinegar and empty the entire thing down into the drain of the dishwasher. The vinegar will help kill the ants that are currently in the drain and will also reduce the smell. Next, you need to clean out your dishwasher from any germs or ant parts that might be inside. You can do this by putting in a normal soap tablet and running your dishwasher on the highest heat possible. Don't put any dishes inside. This will force the vinegar out of your dishwasher and sanitize the inside of it. Use a diluted vinegar and water solution to spray down the sides of your dishwasher just to be safe. This should take care of this particular problem.
Ants might also be coming in through the foundation of your house. You need to make sure that the ants stop coming in this way and don't use this way in the future. Douse your exposed foundation heavily with peppermint oil or with boiling water, especially if you see any anthills nearby. This will kill the ant colony and force the ants to scatter. Then, spray the area with peppermint or lemon juice to dissuade ants from coming near the foundation. Do this over the course of a week. If it does not solve your problem, consider hiring an exterminator.
